We spoke with Ahmet Hatem, the owner of Amco Marble, one of Turkey’s strongest business partners in the Gulf market…
We know that Amco Marble has made significant investments recently. Could you tell us a little about this?
AMCO Marble’s strategic investments are a testament to our unwavering dedication to innovation and growth. By allocating resources to state-of-the-art processing technologies and establishing a key operational hub in the UAE, we are able to efficiently meet the evolving demands of our clientele. These initiatives anchor our reputation for reliability and exceptional quality in the global marketplace.

As a strong company that has been in the natural stone sector for many years, how would you assess the changes over the last 20 years?
In the past two decades, the natural stone sector has strategically transitioned to meet higher standards of quality, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. Production has integrated digital tools and automated processes, delivering unparalleled precision and enabling a broader array of finishes to suit modern design trends. Marketing strategies have evolved from product-centric approaches to holistic brand building, focusing on bespoke client experiences and demonstrating sustainable practices. These industry-wide advancements have positioned natural stone as a premium material of choice in high-end construction and design projects worldwide.
You have also been working with Turkish companies for many years. During this time, what steps has the Turkish natural stone sector taken, and what areas need improvement?
-Turkey’s natural stone sector has made remarkable strides over the years, establishing itself as one of the world’s top producers with a rich variety of stones and a deep industry heritage. The country holds approximately 33% of the world’s natural stone reserves and has evolved through modernization of quarrying, enhanced value-added processing, and expanded export markets across more than 160 countries. However, there remain challenges including the need for greater direct exporter support, better profit distribution among producers, and navigating geopolitical trade risks to ensure sustainable growth. Continued investment in innovation, R&D, and market diversification will be key to maintaining Turkey’s competitive edge.

We often hear complaints about declining business and profitability in the natural stone sector. What is your perspective on this situation?
While concerns about declining business and profitability are often voiced, the global natural stone market continues to demonstrate steady growth, projected to reach over USD 38 billion in 2025 with a compound annual growth rate of approximately 4.5%. The key challenge lies in shifting from volume-driven sales to high-value, premium stone products, where innovation and differentiation command stronger margins. Rising production costs and competitive pressures remain, but companies that focus on sustainability, design innovation, and niche market segments are best positioned to thrive in this evolving landscape.
As Amco Marble, you are one of the key players in the Gulf market. For many years, Turkey was the first choice in the Gulf market. We now hear that countries like China are also gaining strength in the Gulf market. Could you assess the Gulf market’s approach to this issue?
The Gulf market remains highly receptive to Turkish natural stone, recognizing Turkey’s unique combination of heritage, resource abundance, and consistent quality. Although China’s entry has added price competition and supply diversity, the emphasis in the GCC is increasingly on premium, bespoke products and sustainable sourcing—areas where Turkish companies excel. AMCO Marble’s strategic positioning in the region allows us to leverage both Turkey’s legacy and local market knowledge to meet the sophisticated demand with unmatched service.

You have been working with companies in Turkey for many years. What are the important factors for you when establishing new business connections and identifying new business partners?
Establishing new business relationships in Turkey requires patience, respect for hierarchy, and a genuine commitment to building personal rapport. We prioritize trust and credibility, investing time in informal conversations and understanding our partners’ values and business culture. Hospitality and mutual respect are vital—accepting invitations for tea or coffee often opens doors to deeper conversations. At AMCO Marble, we view relationship-building as a foundation for successful, long-term partnerships, emphasizing transparency and integrity throughout the process.
