New times: New challenges for natural stone industry


Since times immemorial natural stone has been the privileged building and decorative material of choice in all civilizations and cultures. In the last few decades its mining and processing has expanded exponentially in many countries as a result of rapid economic development that has taken place in most parts of the world However, in last few years a new phenomenon has taken place which has broken the link between growing demand for building materials as a result of economic growth and greater use of natural stone. While the world economy has, by and large, recovered from the financial crisis of 2008-2009, the reality is the great majority of stone companies, be they in mining or processing, are suffering from severe overcapacity and mediocre financial results.
